The Bargaining and Industry Policy Branch has played a leading role in the development and now implementation of the Government’s signature workplace relations reforms including the Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Secure Jobs, Better Pay) Act 2022, Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes) Act 2023 and Fair Work Legislation Amendment (Closing Loopholes No. 2) Act 2024.

Possible vacancies exist across the four sections of the Branch:

- The Workplace Relations Stakeholders section is responsible for maintaining and developing key relationships with stakeholders to inform broader policy development as well as policy areas including registered organisations, and industrial action.

- The Bargaining Policy section is responsible for the policy relating to the enterprise agreement framework, individual arrangements and the interaction between competition policy and workplace relations.

- The Industry Policy section is responsible for policy development and providing advice relating to the Secure Australian Jobs Code, legislative reform and sector-specific issues.

- The Bargaining Implementation section is responsible for policy advice and support to across Government on the implementation of the enterprise bargaining framework and legislative reforms.

Reporting to the Senior Policy Officer, the Policy Officer contributes to the ongoing success of implementing the Australian Government’s workplace relations agenda including the development of policy advice, administering key workplace relations programs and engagement with government, industry and community stakeholders.

The key duties of the position include:

The Policy Officer (APS5) undertakes moderately complex work under limited direction within the policy of their team’s specialisation including:

- Assist in the development of policy documents for review and publication;

- Provide technical advice in specific areas of policy;

- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders and represent the work area in relation to policy development.

The Senior Policy Officer (APS6) undertakes and oversees complex work under limited direction within the policy of their team’s specialisation including:

- Provide expert advice on more complex areas of policy;

- Conduct research and analysis activities in support of new policy;

- Prepare and lead preparation of draft reports, briefing papers, speeches, Ministerial correspondence, and discussion papers for review by Executive level employees.

Qualifications and Education

Experience and qualifications in policy development, workplace relations, and/or law are desirable.
