About MGA:

MGA TMA (Master Grocers Australia & Timber Merchants Australia) is a nationally registered employer association representing the interests of approximately 2,700 employers across Australia, comprising of independent grocery and liquor stores, timber and hardware businesses, timber wholesalers, all family, and privately owned enterprises, providing members with vital business support services. These services include a range of industrial relations advisory services such as: award interpretation, developing enterprise agreements and providing advice on a range of member queries.

About the role

We are looking for a motivated senior lawyer to join our small team. The ideal candidate will have 5+ years’ experience. Some interstate travel may be required.

Key responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

• Provide advice to members on a wide range of matters including termination of employment, EEO and discrimination matters, WHS and worker’s compensation

• Undertake research and draft submissions on a wide range of issues to Federal and State Governments

• Taking the lead on legal and IR projects and initiatives; interpreting and leveraging insights from IR database; writing articles for various publications

• Participating in conciliation and/or mediation conferences which may then include appearances before courts and tribunals

• Supervising, managing, and mentoring, 3 professional junior lawyers with 1-3 years post admission experience, on individual matters, providing instructions, feedback, and formal review or sign-off of work and supporting the team members’ development.

About You

To become part of this amazing team, there are a few skills you should have:

• At least 5 years’ experience either in a law firm, at an industry association, or other in-house experience;

• Experience in employment law would be an advantage, but applicants with experience in other branches of the law will be considered;

• Good communication and presentation skills;

• Ability to embrace opportunities for change and facilitate new ways of working;

• Ability to oversee the work of direct reports and other junior staff including developing and building their capabilities.

Key Criteria

Experience in the following areas:

• Drafting Enterprise Agreements

• Research, preparation & appearances regarding tribunals related to: unfair dismissals; adverse actions and wage claims

• Advise on Workplace Health & Safety

• Workers compensation

• Award interpretation & wage reviews

• Developing employment contracts & policies

• Demonstrated ability to lead a team
