The AMWU is seeking applicants for the role of Coordinator of our National Research Centre, based in Granville, NSW. The position is a senior role within the organisation and the successful applicant is expected to operate at a high level as part of the Union's policy advice team.

In addition to the caseload and responsibilities of a National Research Officer as listed below, the Coordinator is required to have the skills and experience to:

1. provide National Executive with advice on emerging industrial issues and proposals
for incorporating industrial strategies into growth campaigns;
2. practice advanced team coordination skills;
3. manage a small team in a high-volume work environment;
4. effectively manage time and allocate resources;
5. build and maintain relationships with other Unions and with relevant institutional and
employer organisations;
6. communicate effectively within the organisation and build and maintain effective
relationships with our executive and other departments within the union;
7. anticipate the needs of the executive and advise accordingly; and
8. possess a sound knowledge of the modern and pre-modern Award system.

National Research Officer responsibilities include:

• preparing cases and representing the AMWU before courts and tribunals including the Fair Work Commission;
• providing industrial advice and information to officials, officers, organisers, delegates, and members of the Union;
• research, monitor, and report on developments in industrial law;
• researching and reporting on issues affecting workers covered by the Union;
• preparing submissions for internal and external inquiries;
• conducting corporate and industry research, and supporting organising initiatives as required; and
• miscellaneous projects as required to support the governance, administrative and political work of the Union.

Selection Criteria

Highly developed research and advocacy abilities are required; legal or other relevant qualifications are desirable. Preferred applicants will have at least 3 years’ experience in Industrial Relations or a related discipline using research and advocacy skills and have experience as a team leader / coordinator.
Demonstrated capacity to engage professionally and effectively with a broad range of people in a complex organisation and with a diverse range of external parties.
