The Fair Work Ombudsman (FWO) is an independent statutory office established by the Fair Work Act 2009. The Large Corporates Branch is part of the Compliance and Enforcement Group and is responsible for undertaking targeted compliance monitoring and complex investigations leading to appropriate compliance and enforcement outcomes in matters involving large corporate entities. We are a multi-disciplinary team comprising staff with investigation, data analysis, legal and subject matter expertise. We embrace diverse experience, a forensic mindset and people who enjoy working closely with internal and external stakeholders, including legal providers and expert consultants.
We are looking for Assistant Directors (Executive Level 1) to lead investigation teams in the day to day conduct of large and complex investigations into potential non-compliance and assurance processes involving large corporate entities. This position suits people with an analytical and inquisitive mindset, demonstrated experience working under strategic direction to deliver suitable outcomes and leading high performing, motivated and professional teams.
Reporting to the Director, Assistant Directors in the Large Corporates Branch:
•Lead and develop teams of investigators in geographically dispersed locations, undertaking compliance and investigation activities, including exercising statutory compliance powers in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009 and FWO’s Compliance and Enforcement Policy.
•Drive the completion of work activities, according to Executive Director/Board direction, in complex investigations to meet agreed timeframes and deliver strategically aligned and efficient compliance and enforcement outcomes.
•Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders across various disciplines, including management of external providers.
•Contribute to ongoing business change, capability building and continuous improvement.
•Prepare high quality written information, including succinctly articulating complex information in written briefs, board papers, advice and correspondence to support decision making.
In addition to meeting the Integrated Leadership Profile of the Executive Level 1 level, to be successful in this role you require:
•Demonstrated experience coordinating and delivering outcomes in large or complex investigations or projects, including resource allocation, identification and management of risk, workflow management and meeting defined standards.
•Attention to detail and analytical and problem solving skills to inform investigation strategy, including highly developed skills to identify patterns, assess information, identify risks and draw accurate conclusions regarding compliance with statutory requirements.
•Demonstrated ability to apply judgment, think strategically and set priorities within an overarching project or work plan, and complete allocated tasks to a professional level within timeframes.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to succinctly articulate complex information and communicate effectively with a variety of audiences.
•Demonstrated ability to lead and work collaboratively across a multi-disciplinary team and with a variety of external providers and other stakeholders.
•Leadership experience including mentoring, building staff capability and a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
The ideal candidate will have:
•tertiary qualifications in law, workplace relations, and/or investigations; and/or
•significant experience conducting or responding to large or complex regulatory investigations; and/or
•professional services experience advising large corporate entities in areas such as payroll compliance, wage remediation programs and/or workplace relations governance, compliance and risk.
Knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 and Australian workplace relations framework is desirable but not essential. Candidates without a workplace relations background will need to demonstrate the ability to apply their skills to this context.
Applicants must possess, or have the ability to obtain and maintain, a Baseline clearance and satisfy conflict of interest requirements. Under section 700(2) of the Fair Work Act 2009, the Fair Work Ombudsman may only appoint a person as a Fair Work Inspector if the Fair Work Ombudsman is satisfied the person is of good character.
