About the role:
The Supervising Lawyer is a critical role in the Employment Law Unit within the Civil Law Division of Victoria Police. This role involves the provision of complex legal advice to senior clients, as well as managing complex litigation and WorkSafe investigations. This role also supervises a team of three, soon to be four, employees which includes a Senior Lawyer, Lawyer, WorkCover Litigation Case Manager and a soon to be recruited WorkCover Litigation Administrator.

Your duties will include:
• Providing complex legal advice to senior clients within Victoria Police;
• Managing complex litigation and WorkSafe investigations, including appearing and/ or instructing in various commissions, courts and tribunals;
• Leading a small team, including settling legal advices, providing guidance and support on matters, as well as developing and mentoring team members;
• Involvement in various Victoria Police projects, change initiatives or working groups as required;
• Reporting on matters/ activities being undertaken by the Unit, including providing briefings to senior or external stakeholders;
• Contributing to business and departmental/ divisional/ unit planning and priorities;
• Other duties as required.
As the successful applicant, you will have:
• Significant Employment Law experience, particularly dealing with complex employment issues and litigation;
• Experience appearing in commissions, courts and tribunals;
• Knowledge or experience with the public sector, litigation, equal opportunity, administrative law, OHS and Workers’ Compensation particularly desirable;
• Experience in providing advice to and influencing senior clients/ stakeholders;
• Experience building strong working relationships with internal and external clients/ stakeholders, particularly at a senior level;
• Strategic thinking and the ability to solve complex problems;
• Experience in supervising and leading a team;
• Ability to work with limited direction, be proactive and deal with uncertainty;
• Strong organisation and time management skills;
• Resilience and the ability to deal with high caseloads, strict deadlines and multiple competing priorities.

Requirements and relevant information:
• This position is located at the Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands, however you may be required to work from other locations or from home as required.
• Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
• The successful candidate will be required to undergo pre-employment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
• As a member of the Legal Services Department you will be located, on selection, at a specific office within a Division for a particular advertised opportunity. However given occasional legal service demand issues you may be required at times to undertake varied work within the Department.
