Role Description

As Manager of Workplace Relations you will be responsible to oversee the management and functions of the Industrial Relations (IR) Department and the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Department.

Responsibilities

•The Manager Workplace Relations leads the development and implementation of the IR and WHS strategies and policies.

•The position is responsible for developing and managing key relationships with clients and external stakeholders across the IR and WHS environments and ensures strategic and operational issues relevant to the position are achieved through the effective and efficient management of professional and administrative staff of both the IR Department and WHS Department.

•The position is responsible for setting and managing the delivery of these services, often on a fee for service basis, in accordance with an annual budget relevant to each of these Departments. Strict fiscal controls are followed which involve monthly accounting and reporting against an approved yearly budget.

•Lobby and advocate to State and Federal politicians and bureaucrats on pertinent workplace relations policy issues and other relevant matters.

•The position also acts as Secretary to the Companies Employment Relations Policy Committee which meets on a monthly basis. This involves the preparation of high level strategy advice and information together with Business Papers and Minutes as well as organising external presenters to address the Committee as appropriate.

•Represent the Company / Industry on a range of workplace relations issues to State and Federal Government Departments, Committees and to other industry participants.

•Provide accurate and contemporary verbal and written advice to clients on a regular basis.

•Manage and resolve workplace relations disputes and claims through the provision of advice and representation, research and advocate before various tribunals / courts and prepare and Brief Counsel where appropriate.

•Represent clients or cause to represent clients and (non-member employer clients) in disputes, alleged unfair dismissals, drafting enterprise agreements and cause them to be lodged which comply with legislative and other relevant requirements.

•Manage the IR Audit and Code compliance assessment processes to ensure employers are compliant with their statutory obligations.

•Any other duties as lawfully required from time to time to perform the role of the position.

Qualifications and Experience


•A degree in law from an Australian University coupled with extensive experience in managing workplace relations at a senior level possibly in a similar organisation.

•Extensive experience in dealing with unions including in hostile and complex settings

•A demonstrated record of effectively managing and motivating staff.

•Flexibility to travel including holding a current driver’s license.

•Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills which is critical in engaging, influencing and negotiating with key stakeholders.

•Extensive experience as an advocate before State and Federal industrial tribunals and in negotiations with unions, employer organisations and relevant government departments and safety regulators.
