The IEU is a union with over 30,000 members in NSW and the ACT employed in Catholic schools, independent schools and other non government organisations such as early childhood services and post-secondary colleges.

The Union is seeking an experienced Industrial Officer to perform the following duties:

- provide backup to elected officials in key sector bargaining
- conduct of bargaining for agreements covering smaller groups of members, usually with Organisers
- advocacy before the Fair Work Commission and other tribunals as required
- provide advice to other union officers and members on the interpretation of agreements, dispute handling and legal rights pursuant to the Fair Work Act
- preparation of complex matters for court and tribunal hearings, including underpayment claims and matters relating to teacher registration etc

The successful applicant will have the following attributes:

- relevant tertiary qualifications, preferably legal or industrial relations qualifications
- extensive experience in bargaining and/or enforcement matters
- ability to work as part of a team
- ability to be self-motivated and pursue complex matters, seeking guidance and assistance as required
- excellent written and verbal communication skills
- attention to detail and ability to review and assess lengthy and tedious documents.

A commitment to the union movement and labour values is essential.

Familiarity with professional accreditation/registration and child protection issues in relation to employment would be an advantage.

A driver’s licence is desirable.

The position will be based in our Ultimo office in Sydney. Officers are expected to be available for weekend and evening work from time to time. Overnight travel will occasionally be required to regional IEU offices and inter-state meetings. Weekend work will be advised well in advance. Additional days in lieu are provided in some compensation for work outside normal office hours.

Salaries and conditions are in line with IEU Officer conditions, including competitive salaries, 13.5% superannuation, six weeks annual leave and 15 days per annum sick leave.

These examples could include a written submission to a tribunal, correspondence to an employer setting out issues in bargaining, or material provided to members as a progress report on bargaining.
