Our organisation
The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak union body representing over 1.5 million workers and their families.

Since its creation in 1927, the ACTU has spearheaded some of the most fundamental workplace struggles in Australia’s history.

The ACTU’s role as a peak body is to be a national voice for our movement and defending and advancing workers’ rights by co-ordinating union campaigns, representing workers at a range of government and non-government forums and to provide industrial, policy and other support to our affiliates.

The role
We are looking for a permanent full-time Legal and Industrial Officer to provide advice on employment and related legislation and to undertake research and advocacy on industrial and associated social and economic issues.

The Legal and Industrial Officer would represent the ACTU before industrial tribunals and parliamentary inquiries. This position is responsible for preparing submissions to government, research papers, speeches and other publications. Our industrial team assist in the negotiation of industrial claims, liaise with unions and employer representatives and undertake lobbying activities.

The role sits within a team of experienced union lawyers and Economic and Social Policy Officers.

Key selection criteria
• Comprehensive knowledge of contemporary industrial relations issues
• Knowledge of state and federal industrial legislation and related legislation
• Experience in advocacy and negotiation
• A working knowledge of economic and labour market concepts.
