The Transport Workers’ Union of Australia (TWU) is one of Australia’s leading campaigning Trade Unions with a high media and public profile. The TWU exists to give transport workers a powerful voice in support of social and economic justice. We have an ambitious plan for industry action in 2020 and we are looking for passionate, creative and hardworking officials to help us deliver the plan.

We are seeking a part-time Communications Assistant to join our busy, dynamic team. With a focus on social media and marketing materials, we’re looking for someone with creative ideas who takes pride in their work and keeping on top of industry trends. Next year is a big year for the TWU, so this is an opportunity to get involved in communications projects and campaigns that make a difference.

BASED IN OUR SYDNEY CBD OFFICE, YOUR TASKS WILL INCLUDE BUT NOT BE LIMITED TO:

• Growing our social media audience across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram through interactive posts, “follow” requests, facebook advertising
• Scheduling social media posts for the week, tailored for each platform
• Managing TWU “warriors” group – a closed group of digital activists
• Working with state branches to support their needs and share national comms
• Ensuring the union stays on the cutting edge of what the latest trends are for social media, marketing, video and more
• Monitoring how we are doing on social media, how much we are growing our followers by
• Ensuring maximum publicity for union activities through social media and marketing materials
• Attending protests and actions and providing comms support through Facebook Live, photographs and video
• Assist in the research and compilation of reports and documents;
• Assist in the design and production of materails including flyers, etc
• Assist in political advocacy and events

The successful applicant will have:

• Some experience in social media, comms and marketing
• Qualifications in communications, marketing, journalism or similar desired
• Strong communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write for different audiences
• Creativity and an eye for design
• An interest in human rights
• A self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
• Good IT skills, experience with Adobe desirable
• A commitment to labour values.
