Remuneration
• Full-time
• $60,000 per annum (excluding superannuation)
• Other generous conditions as part of the New South Wales Branch’s collective conditions of employment, including paid days off and paid Christmas shutdown.

Position

We are currently looking for a Paralegal to join our legal team.

The legal team protects the interests of the AWU and its members through advocacy in the Fair Work Commission, the NSW Industrial Relations Commission, the Chief Industrial Magistrates’ Court and the Federal Court. We review enterprise agreements for compliance with minimum standards, recover underpayments for workers, dispute unfair dismissals and other unjust employer conduct and contest approvals of non-compliant enterprise agreements in our industries. We provide advice to AWU officials, delegates and members and contribute to the AWU’s responses to Parliamentary and government inquiries into industrial issues.

Key Role Responsibilities

The Paralegal will be responsible for providing efficient paralegal and administrative support to Legal Officers, including:
• Preparing documents for conferences and hearings, drafting correspondence, preparing of tribunal application documents and completing general office administration tasks;
• Assisting Legal Officers with advocacy before industrial tribunals and courts;
• Reviewing enterprise agreements for compliance and assisting with enterprise bargaining;
• Performing regular administrative duties associated with managing the Union’s industrial practice; and
• Development of educational materials and delivery of training for members and officials.

Application

Selection Criteria (Essential)
1. Demonstrated commitment to Union values;
2. Tertiary qualifications in law, industrial relations, arts, economics or social sciences;
3. Paid or volunteer experience at a trade Union or another similar organisation (such as a community legal centre or law firm); and
4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Selection Criteria (Desirable)
1. Prior experience in a Union legal/industrial team.
