The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Policy Group is responsible for developing policies to support fair, productive and safe workplaces. The Group takes a proactive approach to safer workplaces and higher productivity by fostering continued cooperation with all jurisdictions on national WHS and workers’ compensation laws and strategies, supporting the sustainability of the Comcare scheme, improving productivity in the building and construction industry and progressing other key reform initiatives.

We support broader workplace relations policies and deliver innovative solutions to assist workers and workplaces by improving work, health and safety, helping workers maintain employment through injury, and improving productivity and workplace relations in the building and construction industry.

We work in close partnership with agencies across government and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including employers, unions, regulatory agencies, and state and territory governments.

Who are we looking for?
Our core work roles
• Supporting the Minister, Minister’s Office and the Executive on dynamic, fast moving and high profile policy issues ranging from bullying, sexual harassment, and mental health of first responders to asbestos, silicosis, workplace deaths and safety in the building and construction industry.
• Developing innovative solutions to issues arising from emerging technologies and changing social environments.
• Supporting the drafting and passage of legislative amendments and other regulatory instruments to implement policy initiatives.
• Driving national action on key Government priorities and workplace issues that shape the landscape of the work environment.
• Managing critical stakeholder relationships with states and territories, regulatory agencies and key employer and employee organisations as well as within the department, across government and portfolio agencies.

Position description

EL1 Assistant Director
To be successful at the EL1 level, you will be expected to:
• apply critical and analytical thinking to developing and providing strategic, timely, evidence based advice on solutions to complex policy problems.
• have sound organisational skills, including an ability to lead and work effectively in a changing environment, manage competing priorities and effectively meet tight timeframes.
• have highly developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information succinctly and produce quality written materials such as departmental submissions, Government responses, Senate Estimates briefs, Ministerial briefs and other correspondence.
• be able to develop and maintain productive working relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
• understand, or have the ability to quickly gain knowledge of, government policy development processes including Cabinet, budget and legislative processes.
Relevant tertiary qualifications will be highly regarded.
