The Work Health and Safety (WHS) Policy Group is responsible for developing policies to support fair, productive and safe workplaces. The Group takes a proactive approach to safer workplaces and higher productivity by fostering continued cooperation with all jurisdictions on national WHS and workers’ compensation laws and strategies, supporting the sustainability of the Comcare scheme, improving productivity in the building and construction industry and progressing other key reform initiatives.

We support broader workplace relations policies and deliver innovative solutions to assist workers and workplaces by improving work, health and safety, helping workers maintain employment through injury, and improving productivity and workplace relations in the building and construction industry.

We work in close partnership with agencies across government and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including employers, unions, regulatory agencies, and state and territory governments.

Who are we looking for?

Our core work roles
• Working closely with the executive and Government to provide advice on WHS and workers’ compensation policy issues.
• Working with stakeholders to consider and identify policy goals and analyse and respond with appropriate solutions.
• Nurturing key relationships, including with Commonwealth and state/territory agencies.
• Contribute to the preparation of timely and accurate responses for a range of stakeholders including: the Minister’s Office, Senior Departmental Managers, external agencies and others.
• Drafting a range of written material including Cabinet submissions, Senate Estimates briefings, Ministerial and agency briefs, and corporate documentation.
• Well-developed analytical and research skills to assist in developing and providing policy advice and generating workable solutions.
• Researching, interpreting and applying legislation.
• Contributing to a positive workplace culture and supporting other staff to maintain the department’s high quality standards.

Position description

APS 5 Policy Officer
To be successful at the APS 5 level, you will be expected to:

• assist with preparing timely and accurate advice for a range of stakeholders including: the Minister’s Office, Senior Departmental Managers, external agencies and others
• demonstrate analytical and research skills to assist in developing and providing policy advice
• communicate with influence in both written and verbal mediums
• monitor own performance against deadlines and milestones, and
• demonstrate an understanding of, or the willingness to develop an understanding of, WHS/workers’ compensation issues and practices.

APS 6 Senior Policy Officer
To be successful at the APS 6 level, you will be expected to:

• prepare timely and accurate advice for a range of stakeholders including: the Minister’s Office, Senior Departmental Managers, external agencies and others
• demonstrate highly developed analytical and research skills to assist in developing and providing policy advice, and generating workable solutions
• demonstrate highly developed oral and written communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills, negotiation, representational and liaison skills
• monitor own performance and others in the team against deadlines and milestones
• provide direction and guidance to others in order to achieve performance goals when required, and
• demonstrate an understanding of, or willingness to develop an understanding of, WHS/workers’ compensation issues and practices.
