Industrial Officer – Working Women’s Centre

The Working Women’s Centre Inc is a not for profit organisation that provides an industrial service to vulnerable working women and people. The centre was established in 1979 and has been advising, supporting and advocating for vulnerable women and people for 40 years. The centre provides support, advice and representation to women who face issues in their employment in both federal and state jurisdictions.

The position is permanent subject to continued funding. Employment conditions are specified in the Working Women’s Centre Inc Enterprise Agreement 2018.

Conditions:
• Competitive salary $85,257- $88,264 dependent on experience;
• 11.5% superannuation contributions;
• Flexible workplace;
• 35 hour week (plus reasonable overtime stipulated in the EBA);
• 4 weeks annual leave with loading/ 2 weeks Christmas shut down leave (no loading);
• 12 personal days a year; and
• 20 paid days for family and domestic violence leave.

Working Women’s Centre Objectives
• Enhance women and vulnerable people’s participation in, and contribution to, workplace arrangements that improve their economic prosperity and welfare.
• Increase women and vulnerable people’s knowledge of the legal, policy, and institutional frameworks that promote workplace reform; employment conditions; fair and efficient arrangements for remuneration and safe work.
• Provide a safety net of industrial relations related services to women and vulnerable people who are otherwise unable to access them.
• Enhance work-related services provided by other organisations to women and vulnerable people.

An Industrial Officer of the Centre is responsible to the Director for the provision of support, advice and representation to clients on industrial and employment matters.

Working closely with the Director, the successful candidate will have responsibility for carriage of proceedings in courts and tribunals, before, during and after conciliation/mediation.

An industrial officer’s duties are as follows:

• Providing information and industrial advice to vulnerable people who are primarily not members of unions and who do not have their own lawyer;
• Provide advice across a wide range of federal and state legislation;
• Represent clients in conciliation, arbitration and court hearings with respect to industrial and employment claims and disputes;
• Identify strategic litigation opportunities in casework that will impact the wider community;
• Maintain files and organise client data for the purpose of reporting;
• Perform ancillary tasks as directed;

Committee Representation

• Represent the Working Women’s Centre on a broad range of community, union, government, legal and departmental committees as necessary;
• Raise awareness of the need of women and vulnerable people in various forums;
Union Liaison and Assistance
• Educate and assist women in gaining representation from their unions;

The successful candidate will have:
• Demonstrated knowledge of Fair Work Act 2009, state and federal discrimination legislation and a sound understanding of worker’s compensation schemes;
• Demonstrated abilities in negotiation and conflict resolution;
• Demonstrated high level written and oral communication skills;
• Demonstrated ability to manage a busy case load;
• A legal qualification is required and admission to practise in South Australia or eligibility to hold a practising certificate is preferred (however suitable candidates who are yet to be admitted to practice will be considered on the expectation that the successful candidate will take the necessary steps to gain admission to practice).
• A commitment to the principles of access to justice and worker’s rights.

Desirables
• Demonstrated ability to prepare cases and advocate for clients in courts, tribunals and commissions.
