Registered on 15th May 1905, the Australian Maritime Officers Union (AMOU) is the oldest organisation registered under the Fair Work (Registered Organisations) Act 2009. The AMOU is a federally registered, membership-led union with coverage of administration, technical and supervisory employees in the ports and stevedoring industries, ship’s masters and officers, marine pilots, tug masters, pilot launch masters, dredger masters and officers, and masters and officers on tourism industry vessels.

The AMOU is seeking to employ a full-time Industrial Officer for Queensland on an open-ended employment basis following successful completion of a 6-month probationary period. The position will be based at the AMOU Office in Brisbane. It will involve extensive travel throughout Queensland and occasional travel interstate to service AMOU members at various ports.

DUTIES INCLUDE:

Fair Work Commission (FWC) advocacy at all levels on individual and collective cases and disputes. Opportunities will arise for advocacy at Federal Court level depending upon the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. Negotiating collective agreements, drafting strategic political campaign plans as well as coordinating and implementing these campaigns; and providing members with industrial advice and training. Organising work will be a natural part of the implementation of the industrial portfolio.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A law degree is a distinct advantage but relevant tertiary qualifications are necessary; eligibility to be issued a Maritime Security Identity Card and a Right of Entry certificate, demonstrated experience and skill in FWC advocacy; demonstrated experience and skill in negotiating enterprise agreements, experience in the trade union movement and commitment to trade union principles; campaigning skills, knowledge and preferably some experience of organising, excellent written and oral communication skills; and a current drivers licence.

CONDITIONS:

Salary range is $107,000, - $121,000 p.a. depending on the successful applicant's level of experience. Employer superannuation contributions of 13% are paid in addition to salary and the position attracts 5 weeks annual leave.
